I’m in Guatemala enrolled in a Spanish school and still recovering a bit from hiking up the volcano called Acatenango with 7 litres of water in my pack. The adventure was worth the effort, especially getting to be so close to the neighboring Volcan Fuego which erupts every 40 minutes. Our guides even let us hike up to the shoulder of Fuego before the few hours of sleep preceding the Acatenango summit hike at dawn. I’m thinking they might not let you do that in the U.S.. And for good reason. I guess Volcan Fuego took out a village of 3,000 people not too long ago. Glad I didn’t know that when I was hiking on it.
In addition to the weight of my pack, the immense amounts of dust, the epic views, and the camaraderie of local guides and enthusiastic Europeans, a conversation still remains with me from this adventure.
At the start of our trek, I met Michael from Switzerland. I asked him if this was his first time in Guatemala. His reply? “First time always. The world is too big to repeat a trip!”
And I’ll add to that. Life is too short to repeat our same patterns… especially if they are unhelpful.
Break out and try something new this month. You know, that thing you’ve been saying you’ve always wanted to try one day. Yes, that one!
As the saying goes:
One Day or Day One?
The choice is yours.
